Wembley

With our help, in 2019 Wembley achieved ISO 20121 certification – the highest standard for sustainable event management.

The Brief
Eco-Age has been working with The FA on its environmental management since 2010. In 2018, The FA Group asked Eco-Age to help Wembley Stadium become a world leading stadium for sustainable events.

Our Work With Them

Working closely with The FA Group, Eco-Age developed an event sustainability management system (ESMS) for Wembley Stadium, aligned to the international standard ISO 20121.

We also worked with The FA to introduce a unique employee engagement programme “FAST”. The FA Group’s Sustainability Team is a group of passionate employees from across the business who meet every month to work towards targets in key areas such as energy and climate action, waste and community. Working together, we have implemented policies, we have hosted events to foster collaboration in sustainability in sports, and we have provided sustainable procurement and events training.

In July 2019, Wembley Stadium’s Event Sustainability Management System (ESMS) was certified to ISO 20121 – the highest international standard for event sustainability.

Some key achievements along the way include:

  • FAST was shortlisted for the 2019 Business Green ‘Sustainability Team’ of the Year Award
  • Installation of water refill stations around the stadium, reducing the need to purchase single use plastic bottles
  • Donation of soil from Wembley’s pitch to local training grounds
  • Implementation of a sustainable procurement policy and process
  • 20 local residents were supported with a route into employment through the Event Day Volunteering Kiosk Programme with DNC
