How Aquafil Became the Green Carpet Provider of Choice

If you thought this year’s Disney remake of Aladdin boasted the most magic carpet you’d see this year - think again. We take a look at how Aquafil has transformed ocean and carpet waste into the glamorous event entrance of choice.

Italian manufacturer Aquafil has proven that green really is the new red after creating a series of spectacular entrance carpets for star-studded events using ECONYL® Regenerated Nylon - a fibre that is made entirely from waste taken from oceans and landfills.

Since last year’s glittering Green Carpet Fashion Awards, Italia, in Milan, where guests arriving at Teatro alla Scalla entered via a green ECONYL® carpet featuring the hummingbird motif of the event, designed by creative director Hamish Bowles, Aquafil has continued to roll out the green carpet for a number of glittering A-List events - from the CFDA awards in New York, to Chopard’s new boutique opening in London and Cannes Love Party.

Here is how Aquafil became the green carpet provider of choice for sustainably-minded events:

CFDA Awards 2019

In June, Aquafil participated in its second CFDA Awards with a fresh, custom designed, sustainable ‘green carpet’.  The stunning 11,600 square foot carpet, made with ECONYL® regenerated nylon, was created with ECONYL® fibers in a Millennial pink design that echoed the evening’s overall creative. ECONYL® additionally featured its green carpet in front of a series of mirrored, orb-like installations that served as a stunning backdrop for attendee photo-ops.

Eileen Fisher, Bob Mackie, and Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen were amongst those in attendance.  Jennifer Lopez was honored with this year’s Fashion Icon Award.

“We were thrilled to have Aquafil provide the green carpet for the CFDA Awards again this year,” said Mark Beckham, CFDA’s vice president of Marketing & Events. “ECONYL® fibre is suited for the fashion industry because of its sustainability, versatility and quality. We believe fibers like ECONYL® are the future of sustainable fashion.”

“It was an honour for our team to be part of the CFDA Fashion Awards again this year,” added Giulio Bonazzi, chairman and CEO of Aquafil SpA. “Designers are truly adopting sustainable sourcing, materials and processes. We thank the CFDA for its commitment to supporting a more sustainable future.”

Chopard Boutique Opening, June 2019

Aquafil partnered with Chopard to create a red carpet with a green twist to welcome guests to the glittering opening of the new Chopard Boutique on Bond Street this summer.

The carpet was designed by custom carpet producer Radici carpets using Aquafil’s ECONYL® Regenerated Nylon.  After the Chopard event on Bond Street, the carpet was showcased in Chopard boutiques in Rome, Milan, and Florence, before being regenerated into ECONYL® yarn for another adventure.

Chopard at Cannes Film Festival

Aquafil developed a bespoke ECONYL® carpet for the LOVE party – the annual soiree hosted by luxury jewellery house Chopard - at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

“We are honoured to be collaborating with Chopard this year for their annual LOVE party.  The LOVE party is one of the stand-out red carpet moments at Cannes Film Festival and with Chopard we are excited to see all aspects of sustainable design, from the jewellery to the carpet, at the centre of this year’s festival,” said Bonazzi.

After the event, the Chopard carpet was reused before being recycled, ensuring the ECONYL® adventure continues.

Green Carpet Fashion Awards, Italia - September 2018

For last year's edition of the Green Carpet Fashion Awards, Italia, Milan's iconic La Scala Square was transformed into a beautiful garden, complete with an impressive ECONYL® green and pink entrance carpet with a hummingbird design. The carpet, which greeted guests including Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore and Cindy Crawford, was made by Aquafil using recycled nylon waste.

Hamish Bowles, American Vogue’s international editor at large, was creative director for all elements of the GCFAs. “The hummingbird motif that is threaded through the Green Carpet Fashion Awards gala was chosen as this tiny bird symbolises industry, adaptability and resilience - all qualities that are integral to the concept of sustainability,” he explained.
