Women's Winter Warmers

By Kelly Green

Winter is coming (in London it’s definitely already here) and as the temperatures drop and the nights draw in, we’re investing in that classic winter staple - the wool jumper. Here are some of our favourites.

updated: 01.10.19

It’s officially sweater weather. But not just any sweater, we’re talking sustainable woolies that will last well beyond this winter.

Wool is a natural fibre that biodegrades in soil in four months, and new research shows that it also biodegrades in water. This means that the issues usually associated with microfibres released while washing clothes are not as impactful for wool, making it a great sustainable choice for your winter wardrobe.

Not only that, wool is naturally self-cleaning, stain resistant and wrinkle free, so contrary to popular belief it’s actually super easy to care for wool garments.

Wool sweaters will last a really long time (well beyond #30wears), and there are plenty of places to get your jumper repaired if holes do appear.  So if a wool garment is expensive when you first buy it, the cost per wear over a 30 year lifetime is amazing.

Here’s our round-up of some of our favourite sustainable jumpers to invest in for this winter and beyond:

Arion Hand Knit Sweater, £250, Birdsong

Made with 100% wool and hand knitted by elderly women in London, we love this sunny sweater by Birdsong. Not only does it bring brightness to your winter wardrobe, but also to the lives of the women who make it.  This jumper is made with practised, expert hands at the Bradbury Centre in Kingston and the Knit & Natter group in Enfield, who are all paid a London living wage and also donate revenue from their knitting to worthy causes.

The ReCashmere Button Mockneck, £81, Everlane

Part of Everlane's latest ReCashmere collection, this button down jumper is made of a blend of 60% recycled cashmere and 40% extra-fine merino wool. This recycled yarn blend means halving the carbon footprint of the jumper, creating a winter staple with 50% of the impact with the same softness as 100% Grade-A cashmere.

Make A Difference Knit, £227, Maggie Marilyn

Maggie Marilyn's preppy peppermint green knit is made of 100% Merino wool and provides the perfect wardrobe staple for transitioning between seasons. 100% natural fibres and a commitment to transparent supply chains, Maggie Marilyn's knitwear offers a sustainable alternative to high-fashion knits.

Alpaca Wool Jumper, £209, Ally Bee

A classic grey jumper is a winter essential for any wardrobe and Ally Bee's use of British alpaca wool is both cosy and completely natural. With a commitment to both animal and eco-friendly practices, the yarn is from the environmentally low-impact fleece of alpacas grazed on smallholdings in the south of England. The grey colouring is derived from a natural blend of the original yarn, with no dyes, chlorine bleach or acrylic used in the process.

NELL Wool Jumper, £199, Beaumont Organic

This oversized rollneck from Beaumont Organic is made ethically in Portugal using 100% virgin wool. The best part about this jumper? It has pockets.

Recycled Cashmere Sweater, £280, Riley Studio

Riley Studio's new knitwear collection is made from pre and post-consumer fibre waste, creating recycled cashmere knits with a much smaller carbon footprint. These unisex knitted jumpers are perfectly oversized for a cosy winter's day.

Autralian Merino Wool Crew Knit, $320 AUD, Double Rainbouu

Shaun The Sheep: Farmageddon has partnered with The Woolmark Company to create these Double Rainbouu jumpers. Made from Australian Merino wool, the jumper comes in two unisex designs. Featuring bespoke NFC chips, you can find out the story of your sweater from fibre to farm.

Abela Knit, £350, Mother of Pearl

Made of a blend of organic cotton and wool, this oversized Mother of Pearl knit makes a sustainable statement, with on-trend puff sleeves and in a festive-worthy red.

Phoebe Merino Raglan Top, £129, Flock by Nature

More of a top than a knit, this light-weight Flock top offers the perfect layering base. Knitted from a fine Merino wool and a certified Woolmark yarn, this top has a super-soft finish.

Revel Sweater, £399.87, Mara Hoffman

This lavendar chunky knit by Mara Hoffman is made in Peru using 100% organic cotton. Mara Hoffman uses responsibly sourced organic, recycled and regenerated materials wherever possible.

The Unisex Sheep Inc. Sweater, £190, Sheep Inc.

This unisex 100% New Zealand Merino wool is made in Europe and each finished with an individually numbered tag. The best thing about purchasing a jumper from Sheep Inc. - every sweater comes with the adoption of a sheep, which you can then receive updates on throughout its life.

Cashmere Gauzy Funnel Neck, £259, Brora

A black jumper can be paired with almost anything, a must for any capsule wardrobe. Brora's long-line classic is made from gauzy Scottish cashmere and is in keeping with the brand's 100% British made ethos.
